What is Cannabidiol (CBD)?
Cannabidiol, commonly abbreviated to CBD, is a non-psychoactive, natural compound in marijuana. It is used to help treat a variety of medical conditions and is known to help adolescents combat seizure, pain and nausea disorders. The properties in CBD help reduce inflammation and are ideal for those that wish to treat debilitating conditions without feeling “high”.
Where CBD Comes From
CBD is found in the seeds, flowers and stalks of hemp and marijuana plants. There are more than 85 different types of cannabinoids in marijuana. Cannabidiol is the most prominent cannabinoid in marijuana. The US National Institute of Health has a patent for CBD due to its antioxidant and neuroprotective properties.
CBD is found in hemp, which is grown to have little to no THC in it, as hemp is commonly used to make fibers and textile products. CBD is also found in marijuana plants, which do contain varying levels of THC in them. THC is the property in marijuana that causes psychoactive effects, such as euphoria, hunger and relaxing effects.
Conditions CBD Helps
Cannabidiol is great for treating pain disorders like arthritis that derive from inflammation of the joints in the body. You can combine a CBD strain, such as Charlotte’s Web as an example, with a THC containing strain to reduce the symptoms of multiple medical problems without serious side effects.
CBD can assist with calming severe nausea. It works faster than pill-form pharmaceuticals since those have to digest in your body before they start to work.
CBD strains are also very helpful with seizure disorders, including general seizure disorder and epilepsy. In some states where medical marijuana is legal, CBD products are approved for use by adolescents. Some children have benefitted from using CBDs as a complete stoppage of seizures following the daily use of CBD medicine has been reported by some parents.
Types of CBD Products
One of the benefits of CBDs is that the types of products available give patients more options for relief. You can use a CBD tincture, which is the CBD oil blended with alcohol (which is better for adult patients). CBD oil can be taken as-is and can be used by patients of virtually any age.
There are strains specifically grown for their high CBD percentages such as the aforementioned Charlotte’s Web, but AC/DC and Arianna are also high CBD containing strains. You can obtain CBD strains in dry flower form for smoking like you would with THC containing marijuana.
Topical rubs containing CBDs are great for those with chronic pain disorders. Combining the CBD oil with natural essential oils and beeswax keeps the product natural and safe for nearly anyone without an essential oil allergy to use. You feel almost instant relief
If edibles are your cup of tea, you can also find or make edibles with only CBD in them. These provide longer relief from seizure episodes, severe nausea and joint pain.
Are CBDs right for you?
It is a good idea to try a CBD product at least once, on its own, to determine if it is an option for you. For those that have medical marijuana cards but cannot use their medicine while at work, CBD edibles, tinctures, vaporizers (portable or tabletop) or oils are ideal. You will have relief without having your head in the clouds.
